2000 grand am 2.4 will not stay running pops through intake n back fires. Inside smells hot like wires burning?

I think the hot smell could be from the catalytic converter getting too hot from running lean.

You will have to see what the fuel pressure is on it. There are some special adapters that are used on it. However, I normally check at the filter with a 'tee' fitting and rubber hoses.
