1999 bonneville: check engine light..clutch..solenoid

This answer was rated:

1999 Bonniville check engine light code P0742, torque converter clutch circuit stuck on. Told that the transmission had to be removed and disassembled or replaced. Also noted that the solenoid is under an access cover on the side of the unit. Wouldn't that be something simple as a pinched wire feed that sensor or a speck of dirt in the switch? The term "Stuck on", tells me a short. Transmission works fine otherwise. Once in awhile it will jerk or hesitate when it shifts depending on how fast it is going and how steep and crooked the climb is. Mostly noticible in OD when the speed is less than 45mph. Five hours shop time? How about cleanig and fluid change first, clear the memory, and see if it comes back?
This code sets when the torque converter clutch is stuck on, even when it is electrically turned off. The problem is not electrical. The problem is either a mechanically malfunctioning solenoid or a valve sticking in the valve body. The proper service procedure is to replace the solenoid and clean the valves behind the solenoid. The solenoid is located under the side cover on the transmission. To remove this cover requires supporting the engine and dropping the suspension cradle. That is why the labor is 5 hours. Changing the fluid and filter will likely have no affect on the problem.
