I currently have a 30...
I currently have a 30 gallon electric water heater and have never run out of hot water. I live in MA. I am trying to figure out what the difference is with the point of use 20 gallon vs a whole house tankless water heater. We tend to only run hot water in one place at a time. My daughter loves her baths in the dead of winter. With my research I fear a whole house tankless water heater may not work with my 200amp electrical service I currently have, for our needs to be met. Could we get away with a 20 gallon point of use in the same spot our old water heater is? Even then, what makes it different than the old water heater if it holds water anyway? My goal is to lower my electric bill and find the least expensive option to do so.

Welcome to Just Answer, my name is ***** ***** I will do my best to help you with your issue. If my initial response doesn’t answer your question then let me know and we can continue our conversation.

A 20 gallon point of use heater is only good for low demand hot water applications. It's useless for baths & showers. You're right your 200 amp service is likely too small for an electric tankless. Your bet bet is to put your tank type water heater on a timer so it doesn't run at night when you don't use it.

How long would it take to bring the tank back to temperature? Just looking for an estimate. For example, the timer turned it off at 8pm... If I wanted a hot shower at 530am, when should I turn it back on?

About 40 minutes. So back on at 4:50 am
