I have unscrewed the green cap that you use to adjust the temperature, but am not figuring out how to remove the black plastic piece that would allow me to remove the cartridge with a socket wrench

Since you don't know which model valve assembly you have, I recommend typing the info into your search engine "Grohe thermostatic shower mixing valve" and check out the videos that are available. mainly due to the way the valves and trims are installed and removed, as well as how to properly remove and install the cartridge and most importantly how to calibrate the new cartridge, since this procedure is very technical and can cause problems if not done properly.

I would greatly appreciate a reply email, so I can complete this open question, or just let me know if you need further assistance, and I can continue to look for another solution.
