Can I use a universal thermocouple to replace a TCO style

Customer Question

Can I use a universal thermocouple to replace a TCO style for a State Select hot water heater?
JA: How long has this been going on? And how severe is the problem?
Customer: A week. At first I could light it and keep it lit for 20 minutes. Now after cleaning Everything I can't keep pilot light to even stay lit.
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: Yes I do
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: The big question is can I use universal thermocouple or do I have to use the button style TCO thermocouple that is original?
