My 40 gallon W power vent gas water heater runs when I

Customer Question

My 40 gallon B W power vent gas water heater runs when I repower, heats water tank than shuts off, does not restart. I follow directions, unplug power, turn gas switch to off, turn down thermostat & than turn gas switch back on, turn thermostat back up & replug, usually it starts up again, reheats tank & shuts off & doesn't restart on own
JA: How long has this been going on? And how severe is the problem?
Customer: About Friday it stopped running, severity is that my daughter lives in the house & I don't want her restarting it like I was Service call is about $ 125.00
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: I would like to, but I probably should have a professional check it, my brother says it may be a thermo-coupling what could it be ?
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: Trying to decide if I should spend money for service & repair or buy a new heater the burner may be slightly rusty, like I said it fires back up when I restart the system

No thermocouple in a power vented unit. Sounds like possibly a dirty flame sensor. Could also be rust flakes grounding out the flame sensor.
