This is an indication that you had an ignition failure. If you want to diagnose the possible cause I need you to unplug the heater, wait a minute then plug it back in, then watch what it does. Does the fan on top start? do you see a glow from the burner chamber after the fan starts? does the burner fire up then go out?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I unplugged it and replugged after a while. The fan did not kick in nor is there flame. The lights were off when I got home tonight and hot water did kick in after a long while through the taps.

I went back down to water heater and fan still hasn't kicked in nor has the flame.

Are any of the lights on?

If you're sure the outlet has power (plug in a lamp to be sure) and nothing is happening like you describe then the gas control valve is probably defective. Did you or anyone else turn off the switch at the top of the heater on the fan assembly?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
the power outlet has power. When I plugged the fan in again, all the lights come on for a minute and then all go out. Still no fan though. No one has been in the room for days.

Sounds like a bad gas control valve. How old is the heater?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Not sure.bought the house 1 yr ago. Writing on the controls says Jan 2012

Ok, it looks like the heater is out of warranty but it's not that old so replacing the gas valve would probably be worth the expense

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
OK for some reason the fan just kicked in and the burner is going.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It has been kicking in and out a couple of times now. Doesn't run for long. Still probably a faulty switch?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Now the lights have come on - vacation a and b

Still sounds like a valve with a glitch. It will probably only get worse.
