i have an upstairs sink that fills and overflows at the overflow. the water is clean. It has recently started and seems to fill at a different rate some days. we've been in the home 5 years

Your best option is to snake the drain. A power snake (see attached pic) is the best tool for the job. They can usually be rented at any tool rental outlet. The most likely source of the clean water would be air conditioner condensate if you have an AC unit in the attic.
