My garbage disposal on the left side of my sink and the right

Customer Question

My garbage disposal on the left side of my sink and the right side of my sink both have black oily looking/smelling water. My friend said I need a new garbage disposal. I'm scared to turn on the disposal again to see what happens. Should I just call a plumber or try turning on the disposal again but running no water?

use a large tuperware bowl to cover the drains (to prevent it from spraying everything and turn it on breifly.

What I suspect is that your drain is clogged up and the black you see if from the build-up in the pipes. If this is the case, then you will need to have the drain snaked.
