My whirlpool electric water heater is 3 years old and began leaking into the holding pan it sits there a filter or something that would cause this? We filter all incoming water from the well house.

The problem is either a premature tank failure, in which case it might likely be under warranty... or the pressure relief valve mounted high on the side or top of water heater is leaking ... find that valve and see if it is dripping or has a tube connected that runs to the pan.
