We have a four bed...

We have a four bed room detached house being extended (still will be four bed room) with one bath room (bath and shower cubcle) (upstairs), one attached shower room (upstairs) and a cloak room (downstiars) with, obviously the kitchen. We are having underfloor heating system downstairs (gas/water) and radiators upstairs.

We would like to have an 'uninterrupted'' supply of hot water in the kitchen and in one of the bath/shower rooms at any time.

Our plumber has recommended a '24KW system boiler' and a '250 litre pressurised cylinder' (boiler in the garage and a pressurised chamber in the loft). He recommended Baxi, but we would like to have a 'Worcester Bosch' or 'Vaillant' system.

The pressurised chamber in the loft, recommended by our plumber shouldbe 250 litres; we have looked on the net and realize the 'Unistor 260 L Unvented Indirect Cylinder' is the nearest to our choice from your range.

Another plumber has suggested that we should go for a pressurised chamber combatible with 'solar', in case we would want to install solar pannels in the future.

Our questions to you:

1. In what way is Vaillant superior to Worcester Bosch?
2. If we go for Vaillant products, have we chosen the right boiler and cylinder?
3. If we go for a solar compatible cylinder, can you suggest the model numbeer?

Hi Rick here UK plumber, generally your thinking is sound, I cannot say on here that I recommend any particular boiler (you can see why) your thinking on a solar compatible cylinder is also sound if you are indeed thinking of adding solar later, my only concern is the siting of the cylinder in the loft, even though it is insulated unless it is a "warm loft" ie the insulation is at roof level then, there is a very good risk of freezing if for instance you had winter holiday, Rick

there is not a lot of difference between boilers today, all are electronically controlled and of the condensing style, do not expect any to last like the old cast iron boilers of the past they are just so different, and largely it is the complicated electronics that fail first including fans with built electronic speed control and sensing, I would go for a boiler that has bee on the market for at least a couple of years and has a proven track record, do not go for a new boiler just launched, a cylinder is a cylinder, no sweat there most if not all pressurised cylinders will be stainless steel, if your loft is insulated on the floor then you will need to bear in mind that in the winter you cannot let the cylinder go cold especially if you go away, Rick
