Thanks for the question. The scar inside the hairline can be reconstructed and made much smaller and easier to cover with her hair. An experienced board certified plastic surgeon can excise the scar and undermine the adjacent tissue to close the new opening, thus leaving a much smaller scar. Alternatively, if the scar tissue is too tight, tissue expanders (an inflatable baloon like insert) can be placed on both sides of the silver dollar sized scar and then injected periodically over a few mos. to expand the skin adjacent to the scar. Then the "baloons" can be removed and the loose skin can be closed over the removed existing scar, to leave a smaller linear scar easily hidden under her hair. Your grandaughter and her parents and you should discuss all the aspects and alternatives and whether she really wants the existing scar removed. Hair implants are usually not needed. The main thing is that your grandaughter should feel good about her appearence. Good luck!

This will reduce the scar and provide hair coverage at the same time. A consultation with an experienced board certified plastic surgeon can answer all of your questions and decide what is the best treatment for her.
You have to remember that a scar can be improved upon but cannot be totally removed.
