How do I place more than one CL4940 on single telephone line…

I asked that last question BECAUSE the two old conventional phones MAY BE "loading" the phone line to such a point that the line appears to be "in use" when the second CL4940 is attached to the line.

So please TRY connecting one of the CL4940 units IN PLACE OF one of the old conventional phones - and then TEST for a dial tone and then hang up - to see if the "line in use" now goes away when you hang up.

Let me know your results - when you can.

Which phone do you believe is defective?

I only ask because IF the CL4940 units both function normally - when connected one at a time - that would tend to indicate that those units are OK.

OK - from my TESTING - I have found that it is "normal" for most phone services to send a "busy" signal on any phone - IF a number is ***** dialed in about 15-20 seconds after picking up the line (and hearing the dial tone).

So can the NEWLY acquired CL4940 actually dial an outgoing call SUCCESSFULLY - within the 15 seconds of picking up the line?

OK - I'm not clear on how or where these phones are connected to the phone line OR the sequence of making the calls.

Are these phones connected to the phone line using a "splitter" or to separate phone jacks?

Also, are you making the first call and then hanging up from that call and then waiting for a minute or two before trying the call on the other phone?

The CL4940 phones are really "basic" phones - that have no "software" that controls them. So they should disconnect from a call once you hang up from a call. In other words, the "line in use" should NOT be displayed - once you hang up from a call.

BUT if ANY OTHER device is using the phone line - that is when the "Line in use" should appear on the display.

From my notes, here are the reasons why and when the CL4940 should display "Line in use":

• The telephone is recording a message.
• Another telephone is in use on the same line.

OK - if this is only happening on the newly acquired CL4940, then that unit may indeed be faulty.

If recently acquired, it should be returned to the seller of the unit for a working (and hopefully TESTED) unit.
