Hi and welcome to JustAnswer, I’m Louie. Sorry you had to wait awhile but I’ll do my best to help.
Initially, is the described issue of "...can't hear them..." even if using the corded handset of the base unit?

This is an independent site and members of this online community provide information, repair tips, technical assistance as a form of paid Q & A service.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Either way, handset or corded.

We have unplugged the adapters and plugged them back in and that didn't work
Expert:  Louie replied 1 month ago.

I understand.

Are you able to:

  • listen to messages left in the answering machine?
  • playback the greeting message (MENU # 3 0 3)?

"...yes..."? ...able to listen to both messages left and greeting message?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
for both
Expert:  Louie replied 1 month ago.

Then it would appear that there is no issue with the Panasonic phone.

Do you have a spare / conventional corded phone?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
No I don't. I'm not really sure on the answering machine because I don't get many messages
Expert:  Louie replied 1 month ago.

I understand.

Still, have you brought this to the attention of the land line / home phone service provider?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
No I haven't
Expert:  Louie replied 1 month ago.

Are you able to call them using a cellphone?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I just thought it might be something simple. Maybe pushed a button or something. I was even wondering about the mute.
Expert:  Louie replied 1 month ago.

The MUTE works so that the caller does not hear you.

Other than the VOLUME ▲ button, there is no other control that can cause the caller's voice not to be heard.

That you can hear the "Greeting Message" is indicative that the Panasonic's audio/speaker system is operational.

By process of elimination, this then leaves us with the phone company as the most likely cause.

A way to confirm would be to temporarily replace the Panasonic with a spare / conventional corded phone.

Still, it would be to your advantage to inquire/inform the phone company.

Thanks for your help. I'll do that
Expert:  Louie replied 1 month ago.

Yes please.

Expert:  Louie replied 1 month ago.

Also try to call the Panasonic phone using your cellphone and leave a message. This would be a test of the caller's messages / "...not really sure on the answering machine..."

Hi again,

Is further information/assistance still needed with this Panasonic?
