The answering machine answers and records incoming messages. However, my greeting does not play beforehand. The phone rings, silence, no greeting, whatever they say is recorded, but because there is no greeting played, the caller does not know if the machine has answered or not.

The phone is brand new, just purchased yesterday. Panasonic KX-TGE430. I use vonage phone service. This Panasonic replaces a similar one I had had for years with no problems.

OK - is the Answering system turned ON, using the ANSWER ON/OFF button on the main base unit?

Also, did you attempt to record your own greeting, and if so, did you hear it play back to you when that was done?

Basically, everything works fine. It does record the caller. But they do not hear my message or a beep to know when to start leaving a message. I hear them talking, but they don't know they are being recorded.

OK - where was this system purchased?

Can you also tell me the number of rings you have the system set to - before the answering system picks up the call?

I purchased it online directly from Panasonic. It is set for 3 rings.

OK - can you CHANGE the number of rings on the Panasonic to TWO, and then place a TEST CALL to the number for the Panasonic (from an outside phone), and then see if you hear the greeting you recorded (after two rings)?

I set it for 2 rings and then "toll saver." My greeting does not play.

Did you place that TEST CALL - when set to TWO rings?

And did the system actually PICK UP - after TWO rings (assuming you counted)?

I did not pick up because I wanted to see if my greeting played. It did not.Greg, thank you for your help. I think I will just go to the Panasonic support site. I may have to return my phone for a new one.

Hi again,

Let me be clear about what I'm asking:

Did the Panasonic system PICK UP the call after TWO rings - when you had set the ring count to TWO?

And yes, YOU should NOT try to answer the call while we are performing these TESTS.

The phone stops ringing after two rings. No greeting is played, but it begins recording.

And yes, you MAY have a bad unit - that would need to be replaced with a working unit.

Although I must say that it is quite unusual that a system purchased directly from the Panasonic website would arrive with the answering system not working.

That would be especially true IF you recorded your own greeting and HEARD that greeting played back to you.

We can try one more thing - which is resetting the system - if you like.

The way I do that is to remove ALL connections from the MAIN BASE, including any handset that may be on the base, and leave it disconnected for 15 minutes.

Then restore all connections, set the date and time correctly, record a NEW greeting, and then place a TEST CALL.

If the same results, then the system will be "bad" and should be returned/exchanged for a working system.

Let me know if you do that RESET, and if it makes any difference.
