1) The FULL Make & Model Number of the phone you are working with?
2) The AGE of the phone?
3) WHEN this issue first began?

its a vteck about three years old. Issue started about six months ago. My phone for help alert has no dialtone either

OK - since you have this issue on TWO devices (phone and alert system), we MUST consider the phone SERVICE - and the phone service provider.

So may I ask:

1) what phone service provider you have for this phone line?

2) If you have a DIFFERENT phone you can connect to the phone line - to TEST if that phone works (gets a dial tone)?
