My panasonic phone talking caller id stopped working and it…

my panasonic phone talking caller...

my panasonic phone talking caller id stopped working and it only says in writing incoming call when the phone rings this has been going off and on since Friday and steady since late yesterday afternoon and we can't figure out what's going on, we don't usually answer the phone when we don't know who is calling. Are my phones going bad?

Hello & Welcome to Just Answer,
May I ask the Model Number of the Panasonic phone system you are working with? That model should be printed on the bottom of the MAIN BASE UNIT of the system and START with KX-TG.
May I also ask the TOTAL number of handsets you have with this system and if more than one, do ALL of the handsets have this same issue?

5 yrs never replaced batteries

OK - that COULD be the issue, as this Talking Caller ID does take a bit of power - when compared to other operations.
So let me ask if you DO hear a normal "ring" - for the first or second ring - when someone calls?
Also, if you take the handset from the MAIN BASE UNIT and place it in a different room, does the MAIN BASE UNIT announce the Caller ID?
I only ask because having the Main Base Unit do this is often turned to OFF when the handset is left in the main base.

Hi again,
OK - let's see if we can CHECK and see if the Talking Caller ID got turned OFF on the handsets.
If not, then I would suspect the batteries getting old and needing to be replaced (with new batteries).
To CHECK to see if the Talking Caller ID is ON, or can be switched ON (or OFF), the instructions can be found on page 26 of the system manual - if you still have it (the steps are part of a table). But I have the steps below.
========================================
Pick up one of the handsets (while NOT on a call).
Press MENU # *****
Use the UP or DOWN arrows to scroll through and select the desired setting (ON or OFF).
Press the SAVE (soft key).
Press OFF (to exit programming).
========================================
Now place a TEST CALL to your land line number (from a cell phone or friend's phone) and wait for at least two rings - to see if the talking caller ID comes back ON.
Can you do that for me and let me know what you see and hear?

Hmmm - that's interesting.
I wondering of the incoming caller ID data (from the phone service provider) has CHANGED recently.
So may I ask what phone you are using to TEST - and if the written Caller ID information actually has your NAME showing, or something else?
NOTE - you don't have to tell me what is on the screen, just if it is correct or not.

OK - Let's try a SYSTEM reset - to see if there is something "stuck" in the main base unit that may be causing this issue.
I have the procedure to do that below.
============================
Cordless system "reset" procedure.
This is done by following the steps below.
============================
1) Remove the batteries from ALL handsets in the system.
2) Remove the phone cord from the main base unit AND the phone jack in the wall.
3) Remove the AC power adapter plug from the main base unit AND remove the AC adapter from the power outlet.
4) WAIT 15 minutes. This allows any "stuck" conditions in the components to clear.
5) Reconnect the batteries in all handsets.
6) Reconnect the phone cord between the main base and the phone jack in the wall.
7) Reconnect the AC power adapter plug in the main base unit and then plug the AC adapter into the wall power outlet.
8) Wait 30-60 seconds for the system to reinitialize.
9) Test each handset for proper function.
10) Test each function of the main base unit (answering system, caller id, etc.).

Please give these things a try and let me know what you find when you TEST again.

Did the test as you told me even had my granddaughter call and it was still the same incoming call no speaking and the ring was clear and loud.

Hi again and thanks for testing that for me.
OK - if you have the same symptoms - AFTER the reset - either the main base unit has started to cause this feature to fail OR there is some other issue with the CALLER ID feature from your service provider.
The only way to TEST for that second possibility is to take the main base unit and one handset to a different location (neighbor or friend's home) and TEST it there - making sure that the Talking Caller ID features are turned ON during testing.
But from the way you described the way this happened (over a series of days), I highly suspect the main base unit is the cause.
Now since this system is past its 1 year warranty period, having the system repaired would not be cost effective, and it would need to be replaced. I also did some checking on availability of NEW systems like this, and it appears that these particular systems are no longer made. BUT you may still be able to find some systems (KX-TG9331T) either as "used", "refurbished", or "old stock" - either at a local store OR online.
But I don't usually like to recommend systems that are no longer made, and would suggest a newer system that Is still made. As an example, I did a search of Amazon and found quite a few systems that have this same Talking Caller ID feature. I have a link to the search results below.

You may want to take a look at those results and then see if the local stores carry the same systems and compare the cost. I assume since the ringer IS working, there would not be rush to get a replacement system.
I hope this helps and gives you a plan on how to get a working talking caller ID system again. Please let me know what you find if you do TEST at a different location, or if you have any more questions.
