Sorry I didn't see your question earlier.
May I ask the Make & Model Number of the phone system you are working with?
It sounds like a cordless system, so please look for the model number on the back or bottom of the Main Base Unit of the system (the part of the system that is connected to a phone cord and phone jack).

Oh - I understand - Aren't grand-kids "wonderful"?
OK - let's assume that the batteries are still good OR if new, that they have at least some charge on them.
What I would like you to do is disconnect the AC power adapter from the MAIN BASE UNIT and the AC outlet in the wall, and leave it disconnected for 5 minutes. This will allow the main base unit to "clear" any stuck condition that it may have gotten into.
Then, after this 5 minute WAIT time, reconnect the AC adapter to the main base unit and then the AC outlet in the wall.
Then WAIT about 30-60 seconds and check the handsets again - to see if the "connecting" message has gone away, and been replaced with the normal screen. Also TEST each handset by pressing the TALK button - to see if you get a dial tone.
Please give that a try and let me know EXACTLY what you see and hear.
