Today my doctor prescribed cymbalta 30 mil. I have been takingfluoxetine 40 mil for about 10 yrs.

If you don't want to experience libido effects from anti-depressants, Welbutrin may be for you. However, there are a few characteristics about the drug that you should know about before starting welbutrin. Let me know if you are interested.

Here we go:

Wellbutrin (generic name buproprion) is a unique anti-depressant. It can be used for depression, Seasonal affective disorder(usually when depression affects someone during winter months), and Smoking Cessation.

It is unique because it works via Dopamine, and to a smaller extent, Norepinephrine. There is no risk of serotonin syndrome here because it does not act as Prozac or Cymbalta does. Also, the risk of libido loss is much lower (In practice, I have not seen it to be an issue).

You CANNOT use wellbutrin if you meet one of the following, and this is directly from the manufacturer :

1)If you are bulimic/anorexic- One of wellbutrin's main side effects is weight loss. People with anorexia cannot afford to lose more weight, so it is not recommended for this population.

2)If you are withdrawing from /abusing sedatives- This includes ambien, Xanax, Valium, Alcohol. Wellbutrin has a seizure risk, and ,since sedative withdrawal can preciptate seizures, it is not recommended.

3)If you use an MAO inhibitor 14 days earlier to starting wellbutrin- This is a common warning you will see with most anti-depressants- can also lead to seizures and hypertensive crisis.

4)If you have a seizure disorder- Wellbutrin can cause seizures, as mentioned before. (Some anti-depressants have this risk as well)

Side effects: Mostly headache (reported by 24% of people), but this usually subsides with prolonged therapy. Nausea (8%), but again, this may subside.

A lot of people also complain of anxiety, heart palpitations, and feeling jittery. It is recommended to be taken in the morning because it can actually cause insomnia as well.

The libido effect isn't really an issue with wellbutrin. If it is becoming an issue for you, wellbutrin may be right for you. But make sure everything is discussed with your doctor.

Whatever route you go, please do NOT start taking the Cymbalta 2-3 days after the Prozac- you are at risk of serotonin syndrome because of the length of action of Prozac.
