I'm not sure where your doctor's assistant got that information from; however, I did find information to negate the part where they said it could not be done electronically. As per the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS): "Effective May 1, 2011 the required format for submitting prescription data will be ASAP Version 4.1 (2009). This new requirement is in response to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) rule changes effective June 1, 2010 that provide practitioners with the option of writing prescriptions for controlled substances electronically, and permits pharmacies to receive, dispense and archive these electronic prescriptions."
