That's a great question.
So there are 2 values you need to know with iron tablets, one is the tablet mgs, and the other is the elemental iron mgs. Most tablets are 325mg for iron; however, the actual amount of elemental iron is typically 20% of the tablet mg. In the case of a 325mg tablet of iron, the amount of elemental iron (if it is ferrous sulfate) is 65mg. The CDC recommends having around 50-65mgs of elemental iron in your tablets.
As for taking an OTC iron with 54mg of elemental iron, that should be fine. Do NOT take 6 tablets of that iron to get to the 325mgs.
