Diovan HCT does not lead to liver damage; however, if you have preexisting liver disease then this could worsen that.
Diovan HCT can reduce excretion of chemicals that increase risk of kidney and gall stones. Therefore taking this medication can increase the likelihood of you to get recurring gall stones.
As for the 1-2 glasses of wine, this is not a problem with this medication.

Thank you for the link. I'm very hesitant to recommend the information found from non-substantiated, non-medical literature, especially sites like wikipedia. There is no published medical literature to state an increased risk of heart attacks when taking valsartan. This is somewhat eluded to in that wikipedia link.
As for not being started on just a diuretic, that is a question you will have to discuss with your doctor. I agree with you that, Diovan HCT is a bit over the top for starting someone with newly diagnosed high blood pressure.
You will however experience a higher likelihood of gall stones or the size with HCTZ. Of course, the prevalence is low (<1%). Increasing your fluid intake and checking your electrolytes will help.
