Unfortunately, you are correct, the weight gain is a side effect of prednisone and is true of all corticosteroids. The weight gain is 2-fold:
1st (and major reason): Fat deposits build up the face, neck and abdomen while on prednisone. It also leads to fluid retention because it forces the body to retain sodium. You may notice this with fluid build up in you legs.
2nd: Prednisone increases your appetite leading to the potential for more weight gain.
To whatever extent you can keep active with your arthritis, I would encourage you to check with your doctor about it. Also, any modifications to diet that you can make will also help.
As for the blurry vision, you should contact your eye doctor; however, this may or may not be do to the prednisone. Typically, short-term oral prednisone does not cause blurred vision unless you have an increased intraocular (eye) pressure leading to glaucoma. Most visual effects of prednisone are noted with long-term use. In either case, you should speak to an optometrist to get you vision checked.
