Niaspan is an extended release formulation of the ingredient, niacin. There are many different formulations of niacin similar to Niaspan that are available generically. You can ask your doctor to indicate on the prescription that the brand (Niaspan) is not medically necessary and that you want generic (formulation of niacin by another, cheaper manufacturer). This should reduce your copay or out of pocket expense. The specific manufacturer of the generic niacin will differ depending on which pharmacy you go to. The therapeutic effect will be similar though.
