I'm sorry to hear you've been having side effects from lisinopril. Without knowing your full medical history and other medications, I can't tell you whether or not lisinopril is the best option for you. Typically, lisinopril for high blood pressure is first-line therapy for those with diabetes or those with conditions preventing them from taking other high blood pressure medication.
With that said, 40mg is a high dose to start. A starting dose of lisinopril should be 10mg every day. Doses of lisinopril should be titrated up to 40mg as needed and tolerated. Usually, multiple medications are needed to control blood pressure.
Not knowing your exact side effects, I can say that if is dizziness is occurring, I'd recommend you take the lisinopril right before you go to bed. Most importantly though, I'd recommend you talk to your physician about lowering the dose or changing medications.
