Both xanax and valium are in the same drug class, called benzodiazepines. The doses of xanax and valium that you've listed are comparable in 'anti-anxiety' strength and are commonly used. If you do not have any issues with your liver (metabolizes these drugs), there should be no problem in going from one to the other. I would make sure there is at least an 8 hour gap between taking them though. Since you are taking this on an 'as needed' basis, this shouldn't be a problem.
