Pristiq is an extended release tablet, which is what allows for a once a day dosing. When cutting an extended release tablet in half it reduces the extended release action and makes it more similar to an immediate release tablet. This may affect your steady state plasma concentrations (in short, this is what we look at to see the level of drug in your blood) throughout the day. In the end, this can mean that you may have an effective level of drug in your body immediately after taking the tablet, but once you get near the next dose, your drug levels may not be high enough. That is why it is recommended not to cut the tablet at all.
