Customer: Hello Dr. Mike,
We hope all is well. Our hen is doing so well, but she seems to have diarrhea. She laid a few shell-less eggs a few days ago so we mixed in some of the Rooster Booster in the water and now she’s laying strong eggs. We are not yet eating her eggs just in case. We’re giving them to her for extra protein. The only thing is that for the last two days she’s had diarrhea. We’ve been feeding her seeds and dry worms as treats. We removed the seeds and are giving her regular water without the Poultry Cell to see if it helps this. Are too much seeds bad for her? We give her the Dessert Bucket Mealworm Sprinkles from Pecking Order. Thank you!

Of course she also has her regular laying hen food. We’ve been grinding the pellets so it’s easier for her to eat.
Hello. Will review now and reply shortly.

Have you dewormed recently? If so what did you deworm with?

Customer
Hello, is this Dr. Mike?

Did you get my questions I had asked?

Customer
Hello Dr. Mike,
My apologies. Our chickens have always eaten their regular layer feed (as adults), and when Violetta got attacked by the falcon we started feeding her a scrambled egg daily along with other treats and the Rooster Booster like you suggested.
Customer
The only worms our chickens eat are the ones they catch when roaming outside during the day.

As you had mentioned looser stools. See often they may have parasites in the GI tract too( worms). However the eggs are microscopic.

Often if looser stools are present GI parasites can be considered. Having a fecal test performed at the clinic can tell what parasites may be present. The following discussion will focus on items for looser stools and also routine deworming a few times a year as they are able to pick up parasites while being outdoors too.

Amprolium is an over the counter item that can be mixed with the water in the event that Coccidiosis is present also.

A broad spectrum dewormer may also be of benefit. Online at the above website there are many brands and types to look at. In addition Fenbendazole is an active ingredient that can be looked at too. Having a fecal test at your veterinarian will tell for sure what parasites may be present.

Fenbendazole is an oral over the counter dewormer available online or at agricultural supply stores.

Ivermectin is an over the counter product that also can address mites and also will deworm at the same time.

If the stools stay looser, worsen, do not resolve then having a fecal sample ran at your clinic will be the next step to determine potential parasites

The seeds may not be the issue, it may be parasites in the GI tract.
