Customer reply replied 8 months ago
giving it water with a dropper afew times a day, it is drinking the water
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
it has access to both food and a working water bottle, keeping it warm too
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
barking sound is less, at night and a few times during the day, perhaps it is coughing?
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
also, short stubby tail, perhaps it is a hamster not gerbil?
Pet Specialist: Joan, Vet Technician replied 8 months ago

Thank you for the information. You do have a Hamster if it has the short stubby tail.

What you are describing is a Respiratory infection. Unfortunately this will require a Vet visit, These little guys are prey animals and hide illness well and when they can no longer hide it they are very sick and need professional help.

For now you can help by giving small amounts of Pedialyte via syringe or eye dropper. To get some food into him you can try grinding the pellets of his food into a powder and mixing with the Pedialyte and again syringe feeding. These are only fisrt aid measures until you get him into the Vet.

Please hit reply to discuss this information.

What Customers are Saying:

I must tell you I found this site by accident and was amazed when I asked a question of the Veteranians online. I wish I could have found it sooner it could have made such a difference in the outcome of my pet's surgery. However, I am passing along the information to my sister-in-law (a cat-rescue person who is also a nurse), and perhaps it will help someone else who may experience the same problem. The doctor who answered my question was amazing, and while it didn't come it time to change the outcome of my situation, it is reassuring to know the caliber of Vets/Doctors that you have at JustAnswer. Thank you for being there.
