My dog has bloody diarrhea

Is it possible she ate something she wouldn't normally have eaten? Bones or trash?

I would withhold food but NOT water for a full 12 to 24 hrs. Let her GI tract settle down

Ask Your Own Pet Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Very small stools pasty with traces of blood
Pet Specialist: BestFriendsVet, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

When you restart food, start a bland diet such as LEAN boiled hamburger with the fat drained off, combined with 50/50 white rice. No salt, no butter. Very bland.

Ask Your Own Pet Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Can I give him just boil rice now
Pet Specialist: BestFriendsVet, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

If it does not resolve in a week, you should have her stool tested for parasites. Also, being her age, a senior blood panel is in order to make sure nothing else is going on (this will test the inside of her...her organs...the parts you can't see from the outside. This should ideally be done every year.

He had some crushed chicken bones 3 days ago. A tiny bit.
Pet Specialist: BestFriendsVet, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

No food now. Withhold all food (but not water) for 12-24 hrs. Then start bland diet. you want her GI tract to settle down.

Pet Specialist: BestFriendsVet, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Well that's what probably did it. You can give a few teaspoons of mineral oil (no other type of oil) to help it pass through. Hopefully it hasn't caused a blockage. My former recommendations remain the same though.

Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Ok. Do I need to take her to the emergency hospital? She saw vet about a month ago for diarrhea but no blood. Stool tested negative for w worms.
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Where do I buy mineral oil
Pet Specialist: BestFriendsVet, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

If bloodly stools continue passing for over 3 days, or she becomes painful in belly, or gums becomes pale (they should be bright carnation pink), or if vomiting starts, that means trouble and she needs to go to the ER

If she does end up in the ER, they will want to do xrays and bloodwork

She also pulled out a piece of lamb fat from the garbage about 5 days ago but her stools were formed then. Bloody diarrhea started yesterday.
Pet Specialist: BestFriendsVet, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

OK, so she's eaten garbage and bones. That's what dogs do. ;) Her GI tract needs to simmer down. Fast her. But give water or else she'll become dehydrated.

Have I addressed all your concerns so far today?

Ask Your Own Pet Question

Im worried about a blockage. I usually give her organic veggies n fruit and wellness dog food
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Will she be better soon
Pet Specialist: BestFriendsVet, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

I see dogs eat chicken bones all the time. Most of the time they do not become blocked, but they irritate the gut on the way out. Thus, the blood

Ask Your Own Pet Question
Pet Specialist: BestFriendsVet, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

If she is blocked, you'll know it. She will become painful in belly, possibly start vomiting, and may not pass any stool at all. Although, keep in mind you're fasting her so mot much may come out.

Ask Your Own Pet Question
Pet Specialist: BestFriendsVet, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Most dogs who eat chicken bones recover in a day or so

Ask Your Own Pet Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
What about the hunk of lamb fat she ate. It was f a t from lamb leg with the lining
Pet Specialist: BestFriendsVet, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

That would not cause blockage or blood but it might cause vomiting. Which she hasn't had.

What Customers are Saying:

I must tell you I found this site by accident and was amazed when I asked a question of the Veteranians online. I wish I could have found it sooner it could have made such a difference in the outcome of my pet's surgery. However, I am passing along the information to my sister-in-law (a cat-rescue person who is also a nurse), and perhaps it will help someone else who may experience the same problem. The doctor who answered my question was amazing, and while it didn't come it time to change the outcome of my situation, it is reassuring to know the caliber of Vets/Doctors that you have at JustAnswer. Thank you for being there.
