Customer Question

2 year old poodle. About 16 pounds. Developed Vomiting and diarrhea yesterday and continued through the night, into today. Stool looks like snot, about the same consistency, thick and slimy.
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the poodle eat anything unusual?
Customer: My wife and I were shopping yesterday. The kids do not always pay attention, but he could have gotten into something they left lying about.
JA: What is the poodle's name?
Customer: Mickey
JA: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Mickey?
Customer: Normally healthy and happy. Annual exams/shots on regular schedule. all up to date.

Hi I'm Dr. Carole and I'm a small animal veterinarian. Sounds like there is some mucous in the stool, any blood? This can be caused by a colitis or inflammation in the colon. It can be caused by dietary indiscretion, parasites and bacterial overgrowth most commonly. Sometimes stress can cause it also. I would suggest not feeding Mickey for at least 12 hours, water in small amounts is OK. After the 12 hours offer some bland diets, I like boiled chicken and white rice or cottage cheese. Eggs and oatmeal works good too. You can sprinkle some metamucil in the food to give some extra fiber which helps with the diarrhea. Alternatively, offer some canned pumpkin, good fiber source and dogs love it. For the vomiting give 10 mg Pepcid AC 1-2 times a day. If things aren't getting better I would suggest a workup at the vet. Mickey may need antibiotics like Flagyl or stronger meds for vomiting. I hope this helps. If I can answer any more questions just let me know. If not please provide a rating so I can get credit for my answer. Thanks
