Morning Anna, I don't think I can do the vodka and clove

Customer Question

Morning Anna, I don't think I can do the vodka and clove treatment. He's still with me but very sick, although isn't struggling. I would like to try antibiotics before I leave for the day so I know that I've tried everything. How much of a water change do I need to perform. I don't want to disturb him by putting him in a hospital tank if I don't have to. Thank you again for everything. Natalie

Hi Natalie. I understand. I would do a 50% water change. That should get rid of much of the previous medication. Let me know how he's doing when you get home from work. This is such a hard situation for you. Know that my thoughts are with you.Anna

Hi Anna, so I decided he was in such a delicate state I couldn't put him threw a water change. I expected he would pass but I find him once again at the top of his tank on his stick laying half out of the water. His white mouth is almost silver. I moved him a bit but he's still alive. He doesn't seem to be struggling just very still taking in water. Not responding to my voice at all. I've covered his aquarium again and have the temperature at 81. He doesn't appear to be in pain but are there signs I can look for? I he has a very strong spirit I'm just making my usual evening noises in hopes he just wanted me near to pass. I can not believe he's still fighting.

I'm sorry to hear it is going this way for you. It is so hard to watch a loved pet in this condition. With fish, there are no clear cut signs of pain, but there are other kinds of suffering besides actual pain. They include breathing difficulties, inability to eat, lying on their sides, inability to swim normally, etc. when these things happen a fish is suffering. Unfortunately, they can linger in these states for a long time. From what you have described, your fish no longer has any good quality of life. I do understand your reluctance to euthanize him. I have another idea to consider. You could use just the clove oil to make him go to sleep. This is how some vets anesthetize fish for surgery. It would be like general anesthesia for us. You could skip the vodka part, but use the clove oil so he could be peacefully 'out of it' until he passes. Just give this idea some thought to see if you could do that. If you can't, then all you can do is wait.I know this whole situation is so hard and so sad for you. I wish there were something more I could do to help, but there just isn't.Anna
