Hello Cindy and welcome. My name is ***** ***** I'm a biologist with a special interest in fish. I'm sorry to hear you are dealing with this horrible problem. A severe case of fun rot can cause a fin to come off. The infection could be caused by a bacteria or a fungus. The fish is still alive because the fin isn't necessary for life. Fins help them swim and balance between n the water, but contain no organs. That answers your direct question, but I suspect you would like some ideas about what is going on in your pond. Some additional information will be useful. What medication are you using? On what parts of the body are the ulcers located?Do the gills look inflamed or red?Are all of your fish affected by this?Have you introduced any new fish or plants in the last 6 months or so?Are any of the fish gasping at the surface or hanging near a waterfall or filter?Thank you.Anna
