Customer Question

I have a 5 yr. old terrier mix that is having a problem. She doesn't act sick in any way but when it comes to her bowel movements there is a problem. She has started going green muscasy bms. She strains and strains to go. I think she may have some sort of blockage but I'm 67 and totally disabled and can not afford to take her to the vet. Can you help?

Hello and welcome. My name is ***** ***** I'm a biologist with a special interest in holistic animal care. People often think holistic means no vet, but it doesn't. A dog owner who goes completely holistic goes to a holistic vet. If your dog truly has a blockage, there is nothing you can do on your own. However, I can help you determine if there is a blockage, and if there isn't, give you some steps to try. Some additional information will be useful. How is her appetite? Has she been vomiting? Has she eaten anything unusual? Is her belly swollen? Thank you.

oh thank you. Her appetite is normal, she hasn't vomited. She is walked on a leash and not let out on her own so I don't think she has eaten anything unusal. Her belly seem normal as well although sometimes she seems bloated to me.

Thank you for waiting. With blockages, we usually see loss of appetite, vomiting, and inability to have a bowel movement or passing only of very watery stools. The symptoms your dog has point to some other conditions. A green stool with mucus most commonly indicates an intestinal infection or parasites. Less commonly, it can be the result of something eaten or an allergy to an ingredient in food. Any of these things can cause a little bloating. The first thing I would do, is get a sample of the bowel movement and place it in a clean plastic bag. Your regular vet should be willing to examine it for parasites without having to bring your dog in. My vet only charges a few dollars for a stool exam, but every vet is different. You can call yours first to find out what the cost would be. If the vet finds parasites, he/she will prescribe a deworming medication. If there is an infection, antibiotics will be give. Most vets will work out a payment plan for a regular client, so you can pay a little at a time. In the meantime, there are a couple of things you can do that may help to normalize the bowel movements, at least partially. Give her a little canned pumpkin (not sweetened pie filling, but plain pumpkin with each meal. If she eats a dry food, also add some water or some canned food. Some additional liquid can make stools easier to pass. If your dog has parasites or an infection, the problem won't go away unless it's treated. The pumpkin and extra liquid can just make things easier for her. I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I believe you deserve honesty. If you have more questions, just let me know. I hope your dog will be fine. Anna My goal is to provide you with excellent service – if you feel you have gotten anything less, please reply back, I am happy to address follow-up questions.
