Customer Question

How long can cats go without food, if they get lost
from their home, without sustaining the liver damage
associated in cats with not eating?

Many cats can go weeks without eating before they go into hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease). Other cats may only survive 3-5 days before the disease kicks in. It depends a lot on how fat the cat is/ was. A very overweight cat will go into hepatic lipidosis faster than a cat that was in shape.

Many cats that get lost will hunt on their own and maintain this way. We worry more about chronic muscle loss than going into fatty liver disease.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
