Our guinea pig has a hard crust on his left ear. His right ear seems to be fine. What could it be?

Crusty, flaking, or irritated skin anywhere on the body is a sign that something is wrong, but there are many different conditions that could be causing these symptoms. Mites (which can be nearly impossible to see) are one possibility. Ear mites are a strong possibility, but of course we can't be sure based only on an online description. Bacterial or fungal infections are other frequent culprits that cause such symptoms. There are even more. To read about the various possibilities:

All of these parasites and conditions require treatment by a vet. There are remedies you can buy in pet stores, but they don't work, and if you pick the wrong one, it can make things worse. This link will take you to a directory of vets who are familiar with rabbits and Guinea pigs:

As a first aid measure, you can wash the ear well, and apply some Betadine to it. Follow that with a little plain Neosporin. That won't cure anything, but will soothe the ear and prevent infection.
