Customer: Hi
I bought a baby bearded dragon about two weeks ago. I have him in a 20 gallon tank with a reptisun 10.0 and a basking light. The temps in the basking are are about 100 degrees. He is very alert and active. He does eat every day but only about 4 or 5 crickets rather then the 30 I read they should be eating. Why is this the case?

Hello,

My name is XXXXX XXXXX I have been a Vet tech for 30+ years with speical interest in Reptiles and Reptile Rescue.

Can you tell me if you are feeding veggies and what type?

What size crickets are you feeding?

How big is the Dragon from snout to tip of tail?

Do you feed any other type of prey?

What time of Day are you feeding?

Joan

I have been trying to feed him vegetables such as kale or collard greens. He doesn't eat them much so I tried feeding him squash baby food. The crickets are small no bigger then space between his eyes. He is about 5 inches from tip to tip. I've also tried giving him wax worms.

Hi,

Thank-you for the information. He is very small and young. I suspect the crickets are bigger than a fly size or pin heads. Regular size crickets would account for the little one not eating as many as if you were feeding pin head or fly size crickets. When we feed 30-60 crickets it is usually very small pin head and that can account for the amount of crickets injested. Crickets do come in different sizes:

As far as greens, I suggest collard, dandelion, mustard greens, escarole and curly endives. You can use crushed raspberies or strawberries as well as fresh butternut squash thinly shreded over the veggies. I use a fruit baby food to entice the Dragon to eat the veggies. For prey I do not suggest meal worms, super worms or wax worms. The meal worms are high in chitin and the Super worms and wax worms are like feeding candy. What I do suggest is silk worms, phoenix worms and dubia roaches which come in nymph size which are perfect for a small Dragon. Please make sure you are dusting the prey and veggies 5 days a week with plain calcium and 2 days a week with a vitamin. If he starts having problems with not eating at all or starts getting lethargic, then I would consider a Herp Vet visit to check for a parasite issue which is common in Pet Store Dragons. If you need a Herp Vet please supply a State and I can locate some for you. Joan
