Customer Question
We changed her dog...

We changed her dog food gradually, everything was fine until we got to totally new food. She went on a food strike, at the same time my dad was hospitalized so my hours home were very irregular. We started re-introducing her old food. She Sta Artem eating a bit but was throwing up yellow bile each morning. Talked to vet who suggested Pepcid, then this morning more bile and won’t eat at all. Finally got a small treat in her. She is drinking. Don’t know what to do next.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the dog eat anything unusual?

Not to our knowledge, she is ten years lab.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name?

Peyton

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Peyton?

She usually eats anything you put in front of her, this all started with the food transition.

Welcome to JustAnswer.com! My name is***** and I have been a licensed veterinarian for 10 years. I would be happy to answer your question. I'm sorry to hear that Peyton is vomiting and not eating. When was the last time she was at the vet, and was any lab work done?

I talked the vet Friday, she suggested Pepcid that the bile was due to empty stomach and possibly due to our routine changes. I left a message for her and she will come to our house tomorrow. I have also given her a Pepto Bismal tablet.

Yes, Thank you for your patience.

How much Pepcid did you give? How much does Peyton weigh?

Ask Your Own Dog Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
She weighs 100 lbs and we gave her 20mg
Dog Specialist: Dr. Rachel, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

That's too low of a dose for her. She should be getting 2 tablets of 20 mg Pepcid (40 mg total).

Ok, when is the best time to give this, right before a meal?
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
How often a day.
Dog Specialist: Dr. Rachel, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

You should give it 15-60 minutes before a meal, every 12 hours (morning and evening).

What can we do to motivate her to start eating, we tried chicken, yogurt? She does take the pill with peanut butter.
Dog Specialist: Dr. Rachel, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

You mentioned chicken. Have you given some boiled chicken and rice? A mild diet is best. I would stay away from dairy. Also, giving the correct dose of Pepcid make her more likely to eat.

Anything else we should know
Dog Specialist: Dr. Rachel, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

If the increased Pepcid dose does not help, and because she is a senior dog now, I recommend having some lab work done to rule out things like kidney and liver disease, hypothyroidism, pancreatitis, irritable bowel disease, for example. The vomiting may be related to the food change or the timing could have been coincidental and the vomiting could be related to some underlying condition, like the ones I mentioned.

Ask Your Own Dog Question
Dog Specialist: Dr. Rachel, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

I recommend the lab work even if the Pepcid seems to help, because she could be having acid reflux from an underlying medical problem. In that case, the Pepcid might improve her signs but the underlying problem will be missed.

You're welcome. I hope she feels better soon and that there is nothing serious going on. If I've been helpful, I would greatly appreciate your 5-star rating. Thank you, ***** ***** a great day!
