My dog came up...

My dog came up lame this morning. I thought she would work out of it, but so far no luck. She’s not putting any weight on her hind leg, but let’s me touch it, and massage it. Doesn’t appear swollen. Any thoughts on what this might be?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Have you looked to see if there is a wound on their foot?

Yeah. Nothing is there

Veterinarian's Assistant: The Expert will know what to do. What is your dog's name and age?

Kona, and she’s 4.5

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Kona?

Nope. She’s always been very healthy

Hello and thank you for using this site to help you. I am sorry your question was not picked up earlier.

How is your dog now?

What breed is Kona?

Had she been playing or running and it happened some time after?

Hi. Thanks for the response. She is still not putting weight on her leg, but she is letting me touch it. She is a mutt, but we think half lab/half weenie dog. She’s short and stocky.
She wasn’t running around when it happened.

Thank you for that information. Because of her breed I would look into a few things that would cause this. One would be a tron cruciate ligament, another being a loose kneecap (luxating patella) and the last would be a disc issue in the lower spine causing rear leg lameness.

At this point, you can try management at home for a few days, complete rest from all exercise, no jumping and running etc. and continue your aspirin regimen, but if it does not get better by Monday I would see your Vet. If it is a ligament, then a longer period of cage rest will be needed or possible surgery. If it is a disc in the spine then you may be looking at surgery or at the very least pain management with anti inflammatory drugs, pain meds, or a possible use of short term steroids.

luxating patells may require surgery.

Here is more on all of these with symptoms and treatments

If you continue the aspirin regiment through to Monday, you should give with food and make sure it is plain aspirin. Let your Vet know when the last time aspirin was used.

I might also add a pepcid ac about an hour before the aspirin to protect the stomach. http://Pepcid http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/famotidine-pepcid

Thank you so much for the info. What kind of aspirin, baby aspirin? And what dosage, she’s 35 lbs. also I took a video, not sure if you can tell anything from it.

It would be hard to tell from a video. Your Vet may want to put the leg through a range of motion while feeling the knee to see if it is a ligament or patella luxation.

Regular aspirin ( not tylenol, acetaminophen or ibuprofen) is donsed at 1 to 2 mg per pound of body weight so you should be okay with the baby aspirin. Give only twice a day 12 hours apart.

My goal is to provide you with excellent 5 star service – if you feel you have gotten anything less, please reply back, I am happy to address follow-up questions. Please remember to rate my service after you have all the information you need. I will greatly appreciate a positive rating as that is the only way I am compensated. Thank you!
