Second opinion] My dog ate a rawhide bone and was vomiting blood this morning. I took her to the emergency vet where they did an x-ray. There was something that showed up in the intestine but the vet didn’t seem too alarmed and sent me home to watch her for a few days and not give her any food for 24 hours. They gave her subcutaneous fluids and anti nausea medicine. I am still worried that I should’ve pushed for surgery... should I take her back? She has not vomited again. It has been about 10 hours since she last vomited.

I’m also concerned. If that is bone, then it should dissolve and pass. If there is some fabric wrapped around it, then it could cause an obstruction. That’s not apparent on the x-ray though.I would go 6-8 hours of fasting, then feed every 4-6 hours for 2-3 days. If there is any more vomiting, then I’d push for surgery at that point.I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

6-8 more hours or total? She seems hungry now. It has been 10-11 hours since she vomited.
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
are you still there?
Sorry, I had to sign off last night. It’s 6-8 hrs total fasting time. I don’t ever fast longer than that anymore. How’s she doing? Eating yet? Any vomiting?

She’s fine this morning. No vomiting and I’ve given her two containers of chicken baby food since last night. This morning she pooped out a piece of a tennis ball so I’m hoping that’s what was on the x-ray.

Good deal- it sounds like that was a piece of rubber that you were seeing. No further problems from here- I'd go back to feeding normally.
