My dog has been diagnosed with Parasitic Pneumonia:-(. He was given Baytril & Rimadyl yesterday afternoon. He was also given some sort of shot under the skin.... it was something to help w/the 105 fever. He was doing better most of today but now has become lethargic again. Possible fever, but it’s low if he has one. Suggestions or thoughts?

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner, Diane. Which parasite has been identified as the cause of Odie's pneumonia?

Hookworm. He also has/had a bacterial infection
Dog Specialist: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 5 months ago

Thank you. Hookworm infection doesn't involve the lungs but a concurrent pneumonia is possible in a debilitated dog. Baytril can address a bacterial pneumonia but hookworms are usually treated with pyrantel pamoate or fenbendazole. Severe anemia caused by hookworms warrants transfusions with blood products or hemoglobin substitutes and iron supplementation.

Pneumonia is best treated in the hospital and dogs aren't dismissed until their oxygen saturation as measured by an oximeter is over 90%. Serial X-rays are important to evaluate response to therapy. Antibiotics are often administered for a minimum of 2 weeks. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
