I also have a question...
I also have a question about a small female puppy Belgian Malinois. She is about 15 lbs now and is 11 weeks old. We got her at 9 weeks when she weighed about 10.4 lbs. She was the only female in a litter of 8. All the male pups are at least twice her size. Parents are both very large for breed. She's been wormed and had her first round of vaccinations. Normal stools and urine. She has bright eyes and is super active. I know the breeder had to work a lot and I think she lost out in food competition to her larger brothers when younger. Will she be a normal size now that she is getting fed well and considering her genetics or will she always be small? .

Hi Homero,

Welcome to Just Answer. My name is Jane. I have been involved professionally with dogs in the healthcare and behavioral fields for over 20 years. I’ve worked as a Vet Assistant and Behaviorist and have extensive experience in dog reproduction, as a breeder, for even longer than that.. Canine behavioral issues and training are also my specialties. It will be my pleasure to work with you today.

Females are almost always smaller than the males. the males usually are 2 inches shorter and 15 pounds or so lighter than males. Even if the parents are both very large, the mom or dad's parents might not have been as large. She is below average for her breed and malnutrition at a young age can contribute to a dog being smaller in stature as an adult. However, you may find that feeding a high quality puppy may allow her to recover some of her size. She has already risen from what her estimated adult weight would have been at 9 weeks so that is a good sign. I'd keep up feeding a good high quality diet, keep her dewormed and in good health and she should improve. I do not think she'll ever be huge, but at least fall in the normal range for her breed.

If you have any further questions concerning this matter or need clarification, please do not hesitate to respond. At the conclusion of our correspondence, your 5-star rating will be most appreciated, as this will enable me to continue to send quality answers to additional clients and receive recognition from the website for my assistance.

Will additional (more than max of 3.5 cups of kibble) high quality puppy food for her size help her be larger or should I stick with normal recommended amount for her weight? I read 25% more food may boost her growth?

Please respond. I was told I would receive a response within 15 minutes and it has been far past that.

Sorry I have a litter of pups so it takes me longer to respond. I had no idea they were telling customers that you will get a response back in 15 minutes. Experts come online when they can. Feeding a little more than the recommended daily amount should help boost her growth. As I mentioned, at 9 weeks of age, her estimated adult weight would have been like 29 pounds. Her estimated weight at this point in time is 35 pounds or so. That means her growth rate has already increased. Some owners would even free feed but the problem with that is free feeding makes it harder to determine when she stops eating if that should occur.
