Hello,

My name is ***** ***** I have been a Vet tech for 35+ years.

Did the Vet do a Urine culture?

Is he going to urinate more often and only small amounts pass?

does he seem to have pain urinating?

There are no usual UTI symptoms, urinates ok, normal frequencyno smell. Somehow it is related to extreme cold, started after Christmas with temperatures below -20. We did not do culture test, just under microscope. Seen some crystals, but no stones on X-ray

The Crystals could be causing irritation and cause the blood in the urine. It can also be causedby a UTI. You can try add a little Cranberry Juice diluted with water a few times a day into what he is drinking. Vitamin C makes the bladder inhospitable to bacteria and along with The Antibiotics it should clear up the blood. If the Antibiotics does not seem to clear it up by the time he finishes them, some further testing may be needed like a Cystcoscopy to pull a sterile catch and to see where this may be coming from. Hopefully the suspected UTI is what is causing the blood in the uruie and will resolve itself.

Ask Your Own Dog Question

These are the reasons we see blood in the urine: by a bladder infection or kidney infection, or infection of the prostate or urethra. All these will need to be looked into more thoroughly, if it does not resolve with current medication.

Please hit reply to discuss this information.

How infections of bludder, kidney or urethra are related to super cold weather?

Cold weather can cause a dog to hold urine longer promoting a bacteria growth is the only way it seems to be able to cause an infection. The problem may be totally unrelated issue that just started when the weather changed. Without further testing to know where the problem originated, all is speculation.

If you would like to speak with someone else about this, I can opt out.

No, I think we have to wait till antybiotics run out and do further testing... thank you

You are welcome! If I have addressed your concerns, please take a moment to rate my service 5 stars. I think in this case with an indication of an Infection further testing is needed, if it does not clear.
