Customer Question
My elderly dachshund ate...

My elderly dachshund ate perhaps ten or more glucosamine treats last night. This morning I discovered she had vomited (a lot). She was walking with one of her hind paws drawn up. I’m trying to find out if I need to take her to the vet today.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

She has a herniated disc. She has been doing fine for over a year. Today was the first time she’s had a wobbly kind of walk,

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Thankfully, glucosamine is nontoxic even when ingested in excess. As with ingesting anything unusual, however, transient gastrointestinal distress in the form of inappetence, vomiting and/or diarrhea can arise. I'm more concerned with her ataxia ("drunken sailor") which in any doxi should prompt consideration of degenerative disk disease (a "slipped disk"). Her vet will want to recheck your doxi's back and I would expect a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug, skeletal muscle relaxant, and narcotic analgesic to be precribed and her needing to be kept very quiet for a minimum of 10 days. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
