Customer Question
My Australian Shepherd ate...

My Australian Shepherd ate a ham bone 4 days ago and is now weak, lethargic and not eating. Her poop looks normal. She will only lay on her stomach. She is 11 years old. I am away from home on business.but my wife is taking her to the emergency vet now. Very concerned!

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if the dog will be able to digest that. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the dog?

She is breathing very fast, short. Seems very distressed.

This is the one bone that will kill a dog...this is because it does not digest and it sits in GI tract like crush and run rocks....and causes damage to the intestines and can even pieces the GI tract and cause sepsis...unfortunately it sounds like your dog is already septic....

Ask Your Own Dog Question
Dog Specialist: Dr B, Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

sorry can tear apart the GI tract and intestines....I am standing by for questions...

Is there any chance for her?
Dog Specialist: Dr B, Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

Possibly, the ER vet will have to do a CBC and assess her general condition to see what the prognosis may be...

Ask Your Own Dog Question
Dog Specialist: Dr B, Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

So the ER vet should do a CBC, lyte panel, and chem panel, as well as xrays and abdominal tap....and possibly Ultrasound....

Dog Specialist: Dr B, Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

Prognosis if septic of course not very good...

What is CBC?
Dog Specialist: Dr B, Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

My concern is that she is already showing signs of sepsis...complete blood count
