My dog ate what looks to be 7-8 Hershey kisses, milk chocolate. She weighs about 13 pounds.
She had thrown up 7 times, each being straight chocolate. Twice where it is clear. She is not acting lethargic or out of the ordinary.
Should she go to the vet?

Ask Your Own Dog Question

No, she has self-decontaminated. She ingested as much as 40 grams (1 1/3 ounces) of milk chocolate and it would take nearly 13 ounces of pure milk chocolate to intoxicate herself with the theobromine in chocolate - vomiting, agitation, tremors. Her vomiting is due to ingesting such an unusual food for her. I would fast her for at least 6 hours but leave water down. If drinking induces more vomiting, please replace her water with ice cubes for her to lick. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Thank you. She has thrown up a couple more times with a little chocolate - mostly clear and has been “dry heaving.” Nothing seems to our of the ordinary as she’s been cuddling up as normal for bedtime. We have put out water for her too.

That's good to hear. She's going to do nicely. I can't set a follow-up in this venue so please return to our conversation - even after rating - with an update at your convenience. You can bookmark this page for ease of return.

Thank you. She has been throwing up with more chocolate in it and also a wrapper just now along with dry heaving. Should we just continue to expect this throughout the night as she clears?

No, her vomiting should abate soon. There wasn't enough chocolate in 8 Kisses to cause theobromine toxicity. In rare cases, however, vomiting won't stop until I administer an injectable antiemetic.
