Customer Question
Just adopted a dog...

Just adopted a dog from the shelter....despite the fact that she is an old dog, the shelter had her spayed before I could bring her home. We have been home 24 hours....she is showing no interest in food, she is twitching/shaking while sleeping....she hasmdr She has drank some water.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the dog. What is the dog's name and age?

Maggie, don't know her age as the shelter did not know. I would guess 10 at least. A golden retriever.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

She has defecated twice last night but nothing today....although she tried and a little mucus/red blood, was noticed.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Inappetence is common due to the stress of being translocated. Twitching/shaking is common during sleep and associated with REM sleep. Please clarify "she hasmdr". The mucus/red blood usually indicates a colitis and intestinal parasitism (roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, Giardia) is the most common cause of the blood in a dog that had been in a shelter. Presumptive worming with fenbedazole (over the counter Panacur) once daily for three consecutive days should be considered.
