My 48 lb pitmix...

My 48 lb pitmix apparently punctured a Roundup container & may have ingested some of it. She had dry heaves this am, a few episodes of clear emesis this afternoon followed by drooling, shivering, malaise & dry heaves tonight. We just found the plastic top to the Roundup outside & found the bite marks on a container that she managed to get to. I really don't know exactly when this happened. Possibly yesterday since she outside all day. She was very active today & this evening, but has been unwell for the past 6 hrs. I think it's too late for induced emesis. She's drinking some. Ate a his am but not tonight. She does rest, then she wakes up & gags a little. Advice?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if the dog will be able to digest that. What is the dog's name and age?

Boo, 3 yrs old, otherwise healthy.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name?

Boo

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the dog?

No, don't think so.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on Boo, please?

Glycophosphate (Roundup) is considered to be of very low toxicity to dogs. In fact, no toxic effects were observed in a chronic feeding study with dogs fed up to 500 mg/kg/day. That doesn't mean, however, that less serious side effects won't be seen such as lethargy, anorexia, hypersalivation, vomiting, and diarrhea. Clinical signs usually appear within 2 hours and can persist for 24 hours post-ingestion. Boo's prognosis is excellent, however. There's no specific antidote; the tincture of time usually suffices.

For a very thorough review of glycophosphate please see here:

npic.orst.edu/factsheets/glyphotech.pdf and please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

She was very restless last night...still in bed, though, so I haven't seen her up & about yet. If the problem persists, I'll get her to the vet for possible EGD since there is a possibility of plastic embedding in the esophagus. It was a very rigid plastic top/measuring cup & some of it is missing. Sigh. Life with puppy children. Thank you for your response as it helped to reinforce my plan of care for her.

Thank you for the update. I can't set a follow-up in this venue so please return to our conversation - even after rating - with an update at your convenience. You can bookmark this page for ease of return.

Boo is much better, thank you. Had a rough few days, hard to keep food down. Today's the first day without emesis. She's very active & acts normal. The tincture of time has done the trick. Thanks again!

Thank goodness. Thank you for taking the time to let me know.
