My dog has had...

My dog has had back end weakness for almost a week now. He is a 12yr old toy poodle. Vet prescribed metacam for 1 week but he just seems to be getting worse and more upset when his legs give way. He has also started to smell really bad over the last 3 days and I am wondering whether I should wait until the full week of metacam treatment is complete or if I should call the vet again tomorrow? Any advice would be much appreciated

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the dog's name?

Stanley

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Stanley?

He is a rescue dog so age is an estimate and I have no knowledge of his medical history

Hi, I'm a licensed veterinarian and I'll be happy to help!

Hind end weakness can have many possible causes. Metacam is a non-steroidal anti inflammatory that is often very useful for a variety of conditions in dogs, but it isn't always the most effective for certain situations. Most notably, in the cases of IVDD (intervertebral disc disease), a common cause of hind end weakness in small breed dogs, a steroid such as prednisone may have greater anti inflammatory effect compared to metacam.

So, in cases where the improvement from Metacam is less than ideal, typically I'll then change to Prednisone or similar after a week or so. Since you are seeing worsening, I might be inclined to not wait a full week, and instead stop the metacam immediately in order to safely transition over to a steroid such as prednisone.

Also, a vitamin E supplement,(###) ###-####U daily, can be helpful for its protective effect on nerves that may be compromised from disc problems.
