Overdoses of glucocorticoids such as prednisone used alone are unlikely to cause harmful effects but gastrointestinal signs can arise and be severe. There's no specific antidote and so supportive care is provided in the form of antacids and coating agents for the GI tract. Because 360 mg is an egregious overdose, inducing emesis should be attempted by dosing Foxy with 5 mL (one measuring teaspoon) per 5 lbs of body weight of 3% hydrogen peroxide given with a small poultry baster placed between her cheek teeth and cheek. She should vomit within 15 minutes. If not, please repeat the same dose. Inducing emesis should be considered if the prednisone were ingested within the last 2 hours. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

I regret that my state board of veterinary examiners doesn't allow me to speak to customers by phone in this venue but other experts in this category may be able to assist you in this regard. Please let me know if you'd like another expert to do so and I'll opt out of this conversation. Please stay in the conversation if you wish.

This happened about 15 hrs ago. Should we still induce vomiting?
Dog Specialist: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

Ah! No, there would be no reason to do so. May I have an update on Roxie, please?

She is showing no symptoms. She seems fine. Do you think we need to take her to the vet?
Dog Specialist: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

She's a remarkable dog. No, a vet visit isn't needed unless you see signs of gastrointestinal distress arise - inappetence, vomiting and/or diarrhea, hypersalivation, licking of her face or inanimate objects. Feed and water as usual. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
